So many people (including women themselves!) have no idea just how much hormones impact blood sugar!
For women with diabetes, this can occur at every stage of life:
Menstruation: Progesterone can cause temporary insulin resistance and higher blood sugars.
Pregnancy: Placental hormones increase insulin resistance, especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.
Perimenopause & Menopause: Hormonal fluctuations (less estrogen, shifting progesterone) can make blood sugars unpredictable and affect sleep, mood, and insulin needs.
Hormonal shifts can COMPLETELY change how our bodies respond to insulin, food, sleep, and stress. These changes can leave women feeling frustrated and unheard, and it often goes unacknowledged in diabetes care.
This comic is a reminder that diabetes doesn’t exist in isolation. It moves with our hormones, our cycles, and our life stages. We need more open conversations, research and guidance for every stage of women’s health with diabetes! 🩵
